MAKING THE CHANGE
We are constantly being reminded about how we need to look after our health,
we should do at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day and eat
healthy.
Easier said than done I hear you say.
Here are some C.H.I.P tips on how to motivate yourself.
Lack of confidence - If you don’t believe you can succeed,
what’s the point of trying?
Boost your confidence by making notes of everything positive in your life.
Your strengths and past successes, no matter how great or small e.g. doing
a favour for a neighbour, passing an exam, being a parent. This will help
you realise how competent and successful you are rather than dwelling
on past failures.
Lack of focus - If you don’t know what you want, do you
really want anything?
Focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want.
Negative thought could be " I’ll never be able to get into
my favourite dress/suit by next month".
Positive thought could be "if I walk briskly for 30 minutes a day
maybe my dress/suit will fit me next month".
Focus your mind on an achievable goal and think how you will feel when
you achieve it. That feeling is priceless.
Lack of direction - If you don’t know what to do, how can
you be motivated to do it?
A lack of direction kills motivation and without direction we give in.
We need to identify what it is we want to achieve – lose weight,
be able to read, get a job. Then try to work out what will help us get
there – start walking a little every day, cut down on the number
of biscuits eaten every day, find out what is on offer to help with reading
skills at the local college/through JobCentre Plus, talk to someone at
the job centre about training and voluntary work in the type of job you
want to do.
We tend to focus on what we don’t want and this fear drains our
motivation, try to focus on what you do want. Talk to someone about what
you want to do, they may be able to direct you to support.
