PHYSICAL ACTIVITY FACTS

• For every 1 pound of muscle you build you will burn an extra 35-50 calories per day!! So if you build an extra 10 pounds of muscle you will burn an extra 350-500 calories per day!! That’s the equivalent of jogging 5 miles!
• Your shape is affected by body fat percentage because muscle tissue is more compact than fat - a balloon containing 1lb of muscle tissue would be smaller than a balloon containing 1lb of fat!
• A woman, 5' 6" tall weighing 10 stone who does regular muscle enhancing exercise, will have a lower body fat percentage, and look slimmer, than a woman of the same height and weight who doesn't exercise and therefore has a higher ratio of body fat.
• Throughout life from adulthood women can have a body fat percentage 10% higher than a man of the same age who is of a healthy body fat range and still be in their healthy body fat range.
• It takes 3500 calories of activity to burn off 1 pound of fat, so, for example, you'd need to do 18 half-hour sessions of vigorous walking (9 hours) per week, in order to burn off a pound of fat in a week! If your goal is to lose weight, you should combine a sensible eating plan and an increase in activity in order to make significant progress.
• 56% of men and 67% of women (adults aged 16-74) in Scotland are not meeting the recommended weekly levels of physical activity.
• 74% of boys and 63% of girls aged 5-15 are meeting the recommended weekly physical activity levels.
• 21% men and 24% women (adults aged 16-74) in Scotland are clinically obese.
• 18% boys and 14% girls aged 2-15 in Scotland are clinically obese.
